A healthy charging system reads about 13.5–14.7 volts with the engine running.

Warning Signs

Is your car trying to tell you something?

Electrical problems rarely fix themselves, and a weak battery or failing alternator can leave you stranded in a parking lot. If you notice any of these, bring it in.

Slow crank or clicking

The engine turns over sluggishly, or you just hear a click when you turn the key.

Battery light on

A battery-shaped warning on the dash usually means the charging system needs attention.

Dim or flickering lights

Headlights or dash lights that dim at idle or flicker while driving.

Battery keeps dying

It starts fine after a jump, then it’s dead again the next morning.

Dies while driving

Gauges go haywire, accessories cut out or the engine stalls on the road.

Burning smell

A hot-plastic or burning-wire smell is never something to ignore.

Accessories acting up

Power windows, locks, radio or A/C blower working on and off.

Swollen or corroded battery

A bulging case or crusty terminals mean the battery is on its way out.

Battery, alternator or starter?

The three usual suspects can look alike from the driver’s seat. Here’s the cheat sheet our techs start with. A proper test tells us for sure.

Michigan Winters

Cold mornings are hard on batteries. Get tested before the first freeze.

A battery has less cranking power in the cold while your engine needs more to turn over, so a battery that limped through fall often gives out on the first frigid morning. Many car batteries last around 3 to 5 years. If yours is getting up there, stop by and we’ll check its health and your charging system before winter hits.

How We Track It Down

Tested, not guessed.

  1. 1

    Test the battery

We check its condition and charge, plus the cables and terminals.

  2. 2

    Test charging & starting

Alternator output and starter draw tell us if they’re doing their job.

  3. 3

    Trace the fault

Drains, shorts and bad grounds get tracked down with the right tools.

  4. 4

    You get the price

A written estimate first. Nothing happens without your OK.

Good Questions

Electrical & battery FAQ

How do I know if it's my battery or my alternator?

If the car is slow to crank or just clicks, especially in the cold, the battery is often the cause. If the car starts with a jump but dies again later, or the battery light comes on while driving, the alternator is more likely. A charging system test tells you for sure.

How long does a car battery last?

Many car batteries last around 3 to 5 years. Heat, short trips, frequent jump starts and cold Michigan winters can shorten that. We can test your battery's condition in a few minutes.

Why does my battery keep dying?

A battery that keeps dying usually has one of three causes: the battery itself is worn out, the alternator isn't charging it, or something is drawing power when the car is off (a parasitic drain). We test all three to find the cause.

What is a parasitic drain?

It's something that keeps using power after the car is turned off, like a stuck relay, a module that won't go to sleep, a trunk or glovebox light, or an aftermarket accessory. It can drain a good battery overnight. We track it down with proper testing.

Why does my car click but not start?

Clicking usually means the starter isn't getting enough power or isn't working. Common causes are a weak battery, corroded or loose battery cables, or a failing starter or starter relay.

What does the battery warning light mean?

The battery light usually means the charging system isn't working correctly: often the alternator, a broken belt or a wiring problem. If it comes on while you're driving, have it checked soon, because the car can run until the battery is drained.

Can a bad alternator damage a new battery?

Yes. An alternator that undercharges leaves the battery run down, and one that overcharges can damage it. That's why we test the charging system when we replace a battery.

Why are my headlights dim or flickering?

Dim or flickering lights while driving often point to a weak alternator, a loose belt, or a bad ground connection. If only one light is affected, it may be a bulb, socket or wiring issue.

Do you replace batteries on newer cars that need programming?

Yes. Many newer vehicles need the new battery registered or the system reset after replacement. We handle that as part of the job.

Does cold weather really kill car batteries?

Cold weather reduces a battery's power while the engine needs more power to crank. A weak battery that worked in the fall often fails on the first very cold morning. Testing before winter helps avoid that.

Do you fix wiring and electrical problems, not just batteries?

Yes. We diagnose and repair wiring, connectors, grounds, shorts, blown fuses, relays, lighting, power windows and locks, and module communication problems.

Do you work on all makes and models?

Yes. We work on cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, hybrids and diesel pickups, domestic and import, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Ram, Jeep, Dodge, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and more.

Dead battery? Dim lights?

We’ll get you charged up.
